One of the things that sets Pickens County and this part of North Georgia apart from most of the rest of the world is the amazing number and quality of non-profit organizations set up to help members of our community.

The Joy House is one of those outstanding organizations.  Their current newsletter is found right here   Joy House Newsletter and for even more information visit the Joy House website.

More Arts Activity in North Georgia

Saturday, October 30th, 2010

In addition to the spectacular fall leaf season, there are lots of great things going on in the arts this fall in North Georgia.

Robert Henry will appear at New Lebanon Presbyterian Church on MONDAY November 8 at 7:00.  This is a Casual Classics concert and free to the public as usual.  People who have heard Robert play the piano know that they are listening to a musical genius.  His first album is out to critical acclaim and will be competing for a Grammy award this year.  Last spring I gave his CD to a pianist from the Ukraine* who had told me that Americans could not play the music of Eastern Europeans. She said that Robert was an exception after she heard his CD. Go to: http://jaspermuse.org and click on the Casual Classics link.

Zhanna Dawson  will appear with her son and author, Greg Dawson, at the Friends of the Library meeting on November 18th at 7:00 at the Pickens Library.  The book “Hiding in the Spotlight” is about Zhanna’s escape from the Nazis and is now in its second printing and has been translated into German, Italian and Korean.  This presentation will be inspiring, informative and fun, because both Zhanna and Greg are dynamic speakers and Greg sprinkles his presentations with good humor.

The Creative and Performing Arts Center is in full swing and one of the new groups will be performing starting November 7.  Young Actors Project was founded this fall and will present “Tom Sawyer the Musical.”  November 7 at 3.  November 8,9,10 at 6:30 the PHS Drama Department will also present “Mimsy Were the Borogroves” Please support our talented youth. Tickets at the door are $8.00 for adults and $5.00 for students.  All performances are at the Pickens High School Performing Arts Center Auditorium.

Last night I went to “Smoke on the Mountain” by Tater Patch Players at the Chamber of Commerce building. It was FANTASTIC! The cast is very strong and every one is innately funny.  Their timing was impeccable and kept me in stitches. The story takes place in a country church and includes a lot of the music our grandparents sang:   http://www.taterpatchplayers.org/.

Supporting live performances ensures the artistic integrity of our community.   Thanks to Suzanne Shull, founder and President of Jasper Muse for this update.

See you ’round the mountains,
