Small Towns Rock

Monday, February 28th, 2011

We have talked here before about “Shop Pickens First” and the importance of buying services and products locally. The Video below ran on NBC news and on their website. It is about Thomasville, GA and what they have done in their small town.

We can do the same thing here. We just need to make a conscious community effort.

Rent Vs Own ??

Thursday, February 24th, 2011

At some point in our lives almost everyone has faced the decision on whether to rent vs own. Sometimes the decision is simple and other times it is a real struggle to figure out just what makes good financial sense over time. The New York Times has a great tool on their website that allows you to enter in real values for rent or purchase price, property taxes and assumptions on how home values and rents will rise or fall over time. As you change real input and assumptions the value time line and chart update automatically. It is a very good tool. Don’t be afraid to play with it – you can’t break it!

Casual Classics Presents the Riverside Chamber Players

Casual Classics Presents the Riverside Chamber Players

Mark your calendars and schedule an early dinner.  The Riverside Chamber Players return to Jasper on Monday March 7, 2011.   This Concert is free and open to the public.  The Casual Classics Concerts are a program of Jasper Muse, Inc.  Jasper Muse is local non-profit supporting the arts in Pickens County and North Georgia. Here is the official news release from Concert Master Suzanne Shull:

We are delighted to bring back the Riverside Chamber Players on March 7th  at 7 pm at the New Lebanon Presbyterian Church. This year you will see new faces as the group offers a wider variety of repertoire. We are honored to be presenting a brand new piece by an up-and-coming Atlanta composer, Michael Kurth. Riverside is premiering Michael’s latest work for string quintet and percussion, “Opting Out of Irony.” His music is accessible and I hope to add our audience to his growing fan base. The other work on the program is Shostakovich’s #8 quartet. We haven’t heard Shostakovich in Pickens County since the Riverside Concert in 2007!

Sunday Morning Thoughts

Sunday, February 13th, 2011

OK. I’ll admit it, we are in Orlando on vacation this morning and I did opt to sleep in instead of going to church. So apparently, church came to me. In my inbox this morning is a link to the video below. It isn’t about North Georgia, or business, or real estate; but, it is about life and living. If we all put as much effort into our days as this guy does, there isn’t much doubt that our lives would be better for it and this world would be a better place to live in.

So I am off the soap box. Take a few minutes and watch. It might make you tear up, but it can’t help but make you more Thankful for all the things you have.

Take care,

Some Owners Selling Low to Buy Better

Thursday, February 10th, 2011

Although it may sound counter intuitive, sometimes it might make sense to gladly take less for your home than you really want.  The Article below from the Atlanta Journal Constitution, gives examples of owners that purposefully took a loss so they could get an even better deal on where they really wanted to live.  With some areas discounted more than others and some foreclosures selling at 40 or 50 cents on the dollar, you actually could end up ahead even after taking a loss on  your home.  Here is the link to the AJC On-Line article.
