The Rotary Club of Jasper was fortunate enough to have a live concert this year by a 8 piece brass and wind ensemble that led by our own Dr. Carl McCurdy.

A few more selections follow. I had hoped to have posted sooner, but Christmas day is not too late for Christmas music. Enjoy

Bear on the Square

Mountain Music and More in Dahlonega

Anybody who follows Appalachian Music locally knows that one of the top local experts is Mark Atkins from Bent Tree. Mark has a built-in Appalachian Music Divining Rod that somehow allows him to just get in his car on any given Friday or Saturday night and show up wherever the best music is happening.
If you are a regular at the Crimson Moon in Dahlonega you will see Mark and Maureen there well, … regularly. (For the record, Regina and I and all the guests we have ever taken there also highly recommend the Crimson Moon for both food and entertainment.) The Crimson Moon

Mark sent me this update on the Bear on the Square + a rundown on the Friday night events at Hancock Square. Put on your most comfortable blue jeans, grab your best girl and head for Dahlonega and Enjoy!

The Bear on the Square Festival starts this weekend in Dahlonega. This is a great event dedicated to traditional Appalachian music. There will be lots of jamming around the courthouse square as well as musical acts on the main stage in Hancock Park. The park is located one block north of the courthouse. Music will be presented on the main stage on both Sat and Sun. from 10:00 am – 5:30 pm. There is no charge and there are always plenty of seats.

I believe that the best acts will be on Sat starting with the Solstice Sisters at 11:00 am, followed by John Lilly at 1:00 pm and Sons of Blue Grass at 2:00pm.

Dahlonega also has free music on the first Friday of each month beginning in May. These events are also held in Hancock Park. Kurt Thomas will appear on 3 May. The music starts at 6:30 pm and lasts for about 2 hours. You should probably plan to arrive about 5:30 to ensure a good spot, since the events are often crowded. Bring chairs and a picnic. If you don’t want to pack a picnic, most of the local restaurants offer to-go boxes. Hancock Park is a city park and alcoholic beverages are not allowed. If you want to bring beer and wine, make sure you disguise it.

The rest of the acts for the season are:
June 7 – Blue Billy Grit
July 5 – Remember When Band
Aug 2 – Radford Windham and Step Back Cadillac
Sep 6 – Ugly Cousin and Fools Gold
Oct 4 – Fiddleheads

The Official Bear on the Square information is located here: Bear on the Square

We hope to see you there sometime this summer and as always…

See ya ’round the mountains,
Don
